Antique Vintage Leather & Canvas Golf Bag 1930s RARE

Current Acceptable Offer: $41.00

More Details

This is a real find…rare old golf bag from the 1930s. It is made of canvas and leather. The bottom is marked, “Genuine Grain Cowhide.” It is beige canvas and brown leather. It has a sturdy leather handle and a canvas and leather strap. It has three zippered compartments, one is a hidden attached pouch to go over the golf clubs, another zippered compartment to store whatever and a zippered compartment for golf balls. It also is monogrammed, “styled forMacGregor Tufhorse”. It holds 10 golf clubs and is 39″ by 13″. There are scruff marks that I haven’t attempted to clean and 1 stud is missing on the bottom. There is just a leather piece on the side that might have been used for something but I can’t figure out what. The bag shows usage but it is a real conversation piece. Heck, it could still be used as is. It would be great displayed in a clubhouse, bar, cabin, or in your home. Think Christmas! I’ve described the item as carefully as I can. Please email me prior to bidding. The buyer pays $20 for shipping. International customers, please contact me for exact costs. Thanks for looking. Attention winning bidder. This item will be shipped on September 16, 2010.

Exceptional Copy Of A Vintage Featherie Golf Ball

Current Acceptable Offer: $41.00

More Details

You are bidding on an exceptionally well made reproduction of a featherie golf ball, which represents a very rare and delightful piece of golf history. As odd as it may seem, this ball can be used to play a round of gold, provided you use the correct age and type of wooden shafted implements of destruction. You can play this ball, add it to your ball collection, or use it as a base with which to start a collection. A Little Bit Of Golf Ball History – Throughout its long life, the golf ball has undergone many upgrades and enhancements. There are four distinct stages in the evolution of the golf ball: Wooden golf balls – There is very little information available regarding wood golf balls. These balls were usually handmade of hardwoods, such as Beech or Boxroot. Wooden clubs were often used in conjunction with these balls, which would have made the game of golf a somewhat harsh experience. These balls were used from the mid 1400’s until the sometime in the 1600’s, when the featherie ball was invented. (Featherie) Feather stuffed leather covered golf balls – In 1618, a new type of golf ball was invented by stitching together a cowhide sphere stuffed with goose feathers. It has long been said that the amount of feathers used to stuff a feathery ball would fill a stovepipe top hat. The balls were manufactured while the leather and feathers were wet. As the leather shrunk while it dried the feathers expanded to create a hardened, compact ball. Once coated with paint, these balls were sold, often for more than the price of a club. The labor intensive processes involved in creating a Featherie ball forced the price out of reach of the masses. Though very expensive and subject to many problems when they got wet from dew or rain, this type of ball had great flight characteristics. Naturally, this made the wooden ball obsolete almost immediately. For over three hundred years the Featherie was the standard, only to be replaced with the introduction of the Gutta Percha ball. Gutta Percha (Gutty) balls – invented in 1848 – The ball was created from the dried sap of the Sapodilla tree from South America. It had a rubber-like feel and was formed into ball shapes by heating it up and shaping it while hot. Almost by accident, it was soon found that balls improperly smoothed or “damaged” during play often had truer flight than the earlier smooth balls. Because of this, the hand hammered Gutta ball was developed. Initially, the balls were hand hammered with a consistent pattern throughout with a sharp edged hammer. After a few years the handmade Gutty balls evolved to the use of metal presses. The outcome of this evolution was that is made golf affordable for the lower income golfer. The “Bramble” design, with its minute bulges resembling a Brambleberry, became the most popular design of the Gutta Percha era ball. This pattern was carried over with a many brands of rubber balls. Rubber Core balls – The invention of the rubber ball changed golf as we know it forever. The new design was invented by Coburn Haskell in conjunction with the BF Goodrich Company in 1898. It was comprised of a solid rubber core with high tension rubber thread wrapped around it. It was then covered with a Gutta Percha cover. The balls featured a large number of cover designs for better “what we call now” aerodynamics. The mesh, reverse mesh and Bramble designs gave way to the dimple pattern first used in 1908. Official size and weight standards were established in 1930 by the British Golf Assn. (known as the R&A), prompting the United States Golf Assn to develop their own standard in 1932. Both organizations specifications remained different until 1990, when the standard was set. This is why up until 1990; players in The Open had the choice to play the smaller British ball or the larger American ball. Most chose the smaller British ball.
